5 Signs Your Miami Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade
Your electrical panel (also called a breaker box or load center) is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power from the utility company to every circuit in your home and protects against overloads with circuit breakers.
Many Miami homes — especially those built before 1990 — have panels that were designed for much lower electrical loads than modern households demand. Here are five signs it's time for an upgrade.
1. Breakers That Trip Frequently
If circuit breakers trip regularly — especially when you run multiple appliances simultaneously — your panel may be undersized for your home's electrical demand. Modern homes with multiple TVs, computers, kitchen appliances, and EV chargers often exceed the capacity of older 100-amp panels.
What to do: Have a licensed electrician assess your current load and recommend the appropriate panel size (most modern homes need 200 amps or more).
2. You Have a Fuse Box Instead of Breakers
Homes built before the 1960s may still have fuse boxes rather than circuit breaker panels. Fuse boxes are not only outdated — they can be a fire hazard when homeowners install fuses with the wrong amperage rating.
What to do: Replace the fuse box with a modern circuit breaker panel. This is also typically required by insurance companies.
3. Your Panel Is a Known Problem Brand
Certain panel brands manufactured between the 1950s and 1980s have documented safety issues:
- Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok — breakers may fail to trip during overloads
- Zinsco/GTE-Sylvania — breakers can fuse to the bus bar, preventing them from tripping
- Pushmatic — outdated design with known reliability issues
If your home has one of these panels, replacement is strongly recommended regardless of age.
4. You're Adding High-Draw Appliances or an EV Charger
Installing a Level 2 EV charger (240V, 40–50 amps), a new central AC system, a hot tub, or a whole-home generator requires dedicated circuits with significant amperage. An older panel may not have the capacity or available slots.
What to do: Before any major appliance installation, have an electrician evaluate your panel's available capacity.
5. Your Home Insurance Requires It
Many insurance companies in Florida will not insure homes with older panels — particularly FPE Stab-Lok, Zinsco, or fuse boxes. Some insurers charge significantly higher premiums for homes with 100-amp or older panels.
What to do: Check with your insurance provider. A panel upgrade may actually reduce your homeowner's insurance premium.
How Much Does a Panel Upgrade Cost in Miami?
Panel upgrades in Miami typically cost:
- 100A to 200A upgrade: $1,500–$2,500
- 200A panel replacement: $1,200–$2,000
- 200A to 400A upgrade: $2,500–$4,500
Costs vary based on the panel brand, the amount of rewiring required, and permit fees. Miami-Dade County requires permits for panel work, which we handle on your behalf.
